Profane Space and Secular Time: On the Plurality of Atheism and its Relation to Theology

2018 (English)In: Matters of Love and Faith: Nordic Perspectives on Transforming Social and Theological Challenges / [ed] Ville Päivinsalo and Pamela Slotte, Helsinki: Luther-Agricola Society , 2018, 1, p. 33-56Chapter in book (Refereed)
Abstract [en]

This essay explores some points of intersection between theology and new trends in the discourse about secularism and atheism. It identifies a turn towards self-critique among some atheist authors, resulting in a new quest for spiritual atheism and constructive humanist attempts to fill the spiritual vacuum that has appeared after religion has been heavily criticised by the so called New Atheists. Two different conceptions of the notion “secular” is suggested, and it is argued that “the profane” is a spatial notion that may capture much of modern anti-clerical enlightenment critique of religion, including New Atheism, while “the secular” can be conceived of in temporal terms, in a manner much more in line with a Christian view of history. This notion of the secular is used to reconstruct connections between contemporary secular understandings of spirituality and Christian theology.
