Helping the Environment or Indirectly Supporting Neighbor's Economy?: A Study of the Effects of the Swedish Aviation Tax on Swedish Passengers' Behavior.

Abstract [en]

On April 1st 2018 the Swedish tax on air travel came into eect as a measure to reduce the

negative impact of the aviation on the environment caused by carbon dioxide emissions.

The idea was that more expensive air tickets would reduce the demand for air travel. This

study, with the help of dierences-in-dierences analysis, makes an attempt to investigate

if the policy achieved the desired effect, as well as to find out if there was a passenger

shift from Malmö to neighboring Kastrup airport. The study found that the air passenger

traffic growth in both countries has generally been following a parallel trend over the

studied period of time. Although point estimates are consistent with the hypothesis, the

study, however, fails to find a connection between the introduction of the tax on air travel

and changes in air passenger traffic in Sweden. No such connection has been found in

Malmö vs. Kastrup analysis either.
