In this work, several isotropic, uniaxial and biaxial minerals have been identified and studied by combined techniques of Raman spectroscopy and optical microscopy. The information obtained from interference colours of minerals in thin sections was correlated with Raman spectra taken from the same specimens and with spectra published in the Raman database. Such a correlation was particularly useful for distinguishing minerals exhibiting similar retardation colours, because of distinct differences in the observed Raman bands.
In the optical analysis using a petrological microscope each mineral in thin section of 30µ thick thin section was examined to analyse its optical characteristics in orthoscopic and conoscopic illuminations, at different magnification and rotation angles. The studied thin sections were those used for teaching mineralogy in the department. Raman analysis was carried out using laser light to interact with hand specimen rock type similar to that of the thin section. Polarized Raman spectra were also taken on some minerals.
