Abstract [en]

This study will follow on the group of scholars acknowledging the post-Soviet countries to be their field of interest. I will add to previous research by concluding a study of the Russian foreign policy elite’s discourse on sovereignty in relation to the post-Soviet space of today. The theoretical framework of Stephen D. Krasner, a theorist of the constructivist field, will be of main interest to the study. Krasner’s theory on the modalities of compromise is central as is the understanding of the sovereign state model as an “organised hypocrisy”. My aim is to conduct a descriptive study combining both a quantitative and qualitative approach. I will do so by applying the theoretical framework of Krasner on my empirical material of choice - Mezhdunarodnaya zhizn'. Mezhdunarodnaya zhizn’ is a journal published by the Russian Foreign Ministry. The full digital archive of the journal for the years 2007- 2022 have been studied and the results show sovereignty to be a frequent topic of discussion, especially in relation to Ukraine. The Russian foreign policy elite’s discourse on sovereignty is interlinked with the question of power. Moreover, the results point towards the benefits of combining quantitative and qualitative research when studying the Russian Foreign Policy Elite’s discourse on sovereignty.
