Abstract [en]

This present dissertation is a qualitative study based the patients' experience of caring. The aim of the studies presented here was to obtain a hermeneutical understanding of the meaning of Man's existential world of being a patient. A model of existential interpretation was the method used to attain this aim.

It is the opinion of the author that the patients' perception of care depend on the unique educational process which is present in every culture and which, in turn influences every aspect of life. Subsequently, caring may be regarded in a cultural context where the process of socialization and learning would remain a covert phenomena.

The method of triangulation in purposeful sampling was used in the studies presented here in order to study patients experience of caring in different contexts. In order to obtain an in depth understanding of the concept of caring, interpretation using the hermeneutical dialectic process was used. Different types of texts have been interpreted in the studies presented here. The interpretations of these texts illustrate an in depth understanding of the patients' existential world expressed as a process of conflict between dehumanization and humanization. Dehumanization was experienced by the patient when the caring process was characterized by the patient's struggle against caregivers in order to overcome suffering and humiliation. In the process of dehumanization the anti-dialogue was conspicuous. The opposite phenomena occurs when the caregivers fight with the patient and not for them, in the struggle to protect the patient's humanity. In the process of humanization, the confirming dialogue is the essential mode of caring communication underlying the learning process.

The dissertation concludes with a reflection on the freedom of praxis in relation to caring.
