Comments on the article by D. Schacter (see record 2023-31462-001 [https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2023-31462-001]), in which he outlines the considerable progress that has been made in characterizing the impact of five (of the seven) sins of memory; specifically, transience, absentmindedness, misattribution, suggestibility, and persistence. The present authors' line of research focuses on developing interventions to reduce persistent intrusive memories that result from traumatic experiences. Inspired by Schacter’s (2022) thoughtful discussion of the advancements that have been made over the past two decades in understanding the sins of memory, they focus this commentary on outlining seven challenges surrounding their development of treatment for intrusive memory persistence. These are challenges where they believe basic research can help in progressing the current state of treatment.
