Abstract [en]
According to previous research, criminal and violent women tend to be portrayed in the news media as either indoctrinated, powerless victims or as unnatural, deviant monsters. These media images influence how such women are viewed and treated by the institutions that affect their lives and subsequently how policies are designed to help these women. This study examines whether and how these two media images appear in the discourse surrounding gang crime in the Swedish news media, and further identifies and constructs a third new representation, the female entrepreneur. A qualitative text analysis was used to identify signs of the two representations identified in previous research. During the analysis it became apparent that there was a need to construct a new type of representation, which the study refers to as the female entrepreneur. The study contributes to the development of theory in the field of media images of criminal women and highlights a current social problem from a gender perspective. Whether the new representation emerged dependent on the discourse around gang crime or the context around Swedish, gender-equal journalism encourages further research in this area.
