Internal magnetic properties in rare earth metals and compounds

Abstract [en]

In gadolinium the pressure dependence of the local field has been studied. Applied field up to 0.6 GPa have a very strong influence on the local muon fields. Above the spin turning temperature the size of the negative contact field increases with pressure, while at lower temperatures the dominating effect is the change of the angle of magnetization with pressure. Also the relaxation in a wide temperature range above TC in single crystal gadolinium has been studied and compared with mode coupling theory developed for this system, and shows that the behavior is far from being described by simple power laws.

Erbium has been studied in the ferromagnetic cone regime below TC where the dominant observation is the presence of two frequencies which is increasing with temperature.

The local magnetic field as function of temperature and applied hydrostatic pressure has been studied in dysprosium and holmium. Both metals show very similar behavior with an unexpected increase in local field with temperature below TC. The wide variation of the dynamic magnetic behavior in the REGa6 series with RE = Ce, Nd, Gd and Tb has been studied by µSR.

The effect of Zn doping in the antiferromagnetic La2CuO4 has been studied. La2CuO4 was the base material for the first high temperature superconductors andexperiments has shown that also the superconducting properties is strongly suppressedby Zn doping. A RKKY like model is used for explaining the strong effect of the Zndoping on the ordering temperature.
