Abstract [en]
This paper examines Elizbeth Holmes’ communication according to charisma, to understand how charismatic communication may have played a role in the Theranos fraud. The aim of this study is to gain an understanding of how Elizabeth Holmes communicated charismatically. Using a method of qualitative content analysis and in part semiotic analysis, three separate videos were examined and analyzed. The material was used in order to gain increased understanding of how Holmes communicated in three separate situations. The study found that Holmes used communication tools in order to perceive herself as charismatic. This, in turn, contributes to more knowledge in how fraudsters use charismatic communicative tools in order to establish themselves as legitimate. The reason for this is to hopefully shed some light on how charismatic leaders through their communication can legitimize fraud. The goal is to, through this research, contribute to an increased understanding about how fraudsters communicate charismatically and in turn help society prepare to spot similar frauds in the future and also inspire further research on the subject.
