Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to identify and understand the key socio-economic benefits of ownership and management of land by environmental non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Scotland. The objectives were to:

  1. Assess the extent of ownership and management of land by environmental NGOs in Scotland.
  2. Determine the natural heritage significance and landscape value of land under NGO ownership and management.
  3. Determine key socio-economic benefits of NGO ownership and management of land, including employment impacts, access and visitor numbers, extent of volunteering and direct spend.
  4. Assess the extent of community engagement on NGO-owned and managed land, including educational engagement and partnerships.
