Abstract [en]

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has reminded humanity of its vulnerability to infectious disease outbreaks. Research has shown solid evidence that migrants were disproportionately affected by COVID-19 across many high-income countries. However, little is known about the vulnerability pathways behind this disproportionate impact, particularly, the effect on the sense of belonging of migrants and their trust in the healthcare system.

Aim and purpose: This paper aims to explore the association between migrants' sense of belonging to Swedish society and their trust in the healthcare system in getting treated for COVID-19 if in medical need.

Targeted sample: Adult (>18 years young) migrants living across Swedish counties, regardless of the reason behind their migration, age, gender, region of origin, ethnicity, or years since migration.

Methods: A cross-sectional study based on secondary data of migrants in Sweden. Starting with descriptive statistics followed by Chi-square tests and ending with a binary logistic regression analysis.

Results: Migrants' sense of belonging to Swedish society was associated with their trust in the healthcare system for getting COVID-19 medical care if needed. Migrants who felt a sense of belonging to Swedish society were more likely to trust the healthcare system during the pandemic.

Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that migrants’ sense of belonging to Swedish society is associated with their trust in the healthcare system during the pandemic. These findings support previous research and the social determinants of health framework in that social belongingness and integration have a role in individuals' overall health and well-being.
