Abstract [en]

This paper contains an empirical investigation of patterns in the emergence and diffusion of technological capabilities in the multinational corporation. It draws upon a database containing the complete patenting history of 24 Swedish multinationals over the 1893-1990 period, allowing for the identification of when and where in the multinational network new technological capabilities first emerged, and when and to what extent they subsequently diffused into other units of the multinational network. Differences between diffusion patterns for technological capabilities emerging at headquarters and in foreign units are identified and discussed.
