Postmodern Library Utopianism (English)
Abstract [en]

This master's thesis investigates the postmodern library utopianism. With the help of Barbara Goodwins & Keith Taylors theories concerning utopia, I use the method of close reading texts describing postmodern utopian libraries. By contrasting them with the modern library utopianism, I draw the following conclusions regarding the postmodern library utopianism:There are two kinds of postmodern library utopianism. The first is a reaction to the modern fetishization with order; as a contrast it embraces uncertainty and chaos. Also it regards the library as the foundation for creativity, not as the repository for the already created. The second kind of postmodern library utopianism is a new form for the modern wish to build an ultimate library containing every document that ever existed. The differences is that this postmodern version is based on information technology, it is non-hierachical, and considers decentralization as the foundation; everyone is supposed to be able to contribute. The postmodern utopian librarian, finally, is become i cyborg; a hybrid creature liberated from the modern boundaries and dualities, living in symbiosis with the information.
