There have been many studies on the subject acquisition and mergers; however, the studies have usually focused on the actual merger of the two companies. Within these studies, there are some that argue that the dependence on factors in the companies’environment has been neglected.
One factor that is difficult to predict or forecast is how the relationship with the suppliers will be affected by an acquisition. In many cases, companies have had a longstanding relationship with its suppliers; a new owner might need to rebuild the relationships if old contacts have been lost. One question that could arise is if companies can keep already existing relationships with suppliers or if they in a post‐acquisition have to start over from the beginning and negotiate new contracts.
This study shows that the resource ties, activity links and actor bonds in the relationship are intact after the acquisition but that they have changed characteristics and importance. The degree of dependency might also change depending on the size of the new owner.
