Abstract [en]

Purpose/Aim: Analyze mediated grief in daily morning newspapers compared to evening newspaper in the Engla case, and see if it changes over time.

Material/Method: The material consists of 40 articles between April 6th and May 31th. 20 articles from Sweden’s two main daily morning newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, and 20 from the two evening newspapers, Expressen and Aftonbladet. When I studied the articles a certain course of events was revealed. Consisting of in chronological order the accident, the hope, it has actually happened, immediately after and long-term after. The used method is a qualitative text analysis, because the aim is to get the essential content out of the text. You carefully read and look at the text as a whole, as parts of the whole text and the context it is part in.

Main results: The study has shown both similarity and difference between daily newspapers and evening newspapers in the articles about mediated grief in the Engla case. In the articles a series of actors appears and they all have different roles and special tasks. The actor’s roles difference between the newspapers and over time in the articles, such as who appears where and what their purpose are. All newspapers have a similar way of presenting and design the grief article, and there are similar actors in the articles in the different newspapers. The big differences are in the beginning of the course of event, where the daily morning newspapers and the evening newspapers really distinguish. In the intense parts, in the middle of the course of event, the daily morning newspapers get more of the sensational journalism that´s usually more known as the evening newspapers journalism. It´s more emotional articles where specific persons get space to tell the public about their grief. This continues to the very end when the newspapers start to distinguish again. Keywords: News, mourning, mediated grief, ordinary people, media logic, framing theory, news design, qualitative text analysis, roles and actors, news design, course of events, daily morning newspapers, evening newspapers.
