Paper type - This is the first part of a 30 credits Master´s thesis. This part contains an introduction, a problem discussion, the methodology adopted, the empirical background and the theoretical framework.
Purpose - The purpose of this thesis is to identify barriers to compliance with the codes of conduct within the Chinese apparel industry.
Methodology - The field study is based on semi-structured qualitative interviews with the management of five suppliers within the Chinese apparel industry, The study was done from a supplier´s perspective and the field study was conducted during the period from November to December 2009. All of the interviews were carried out in the Guangdong province in the southern part of China.
Findings - The result of the field study shows that there are several barriers in the Chinese apparel industry that are hampering the level of compliance with the codes of conduct, among which ... are the most important.
Value - This thesis provides a contextual understanding on how different actors in the Chinese apparel industry influence the typical supplier´s ability to comply with the codes of conduct.
