Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out what kind of experience mothers of 18 months old children felt when being a mother of a small child. The study was carried out by using a questionnaire that was distributed to mothers in relation to an intervention carried out at carefully selected Child Health Centres in Sweden. The intervention was followed up by the study: Barnhälsovård i förändring (BIF) (Child Health Care in Changing). The sample in this study was mothers that answered one open question in the questionnaire: Please write down your thoughts, opinions and reflections around being a mother of a small child. Totally 311 mothers of 18 months old children participated. This degree project is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach with a manifesto analysis of the content. Four categories emerged from the theme Thoughts and reflections of a mother. The categories were: Parental Stress, Parenthood, Social Support and Economy.

In the result of this study it appeared that most mothers of small children had positive experiences or both delightful and difficult experiences at the same time being a small child mother. Among the mothers there was found out individual differences in experience of time, both your own spending time and time spending with your family. That mothers are stressed may depend on various factors, for example economical troubles, insufficient social network and demands so high they feel difficult to reach. Other risk factors could be fatigue and anxiety for diseases. The mothers had some opinions to the Child Health Centre concerning their support to the mothers, special support to mothers with a tendency of depression. The mothers of small children had positive experiences of parent groups, the parent groups were a good alternative for socializing and developing in parenthood.
