In this paper, we introduce a discussion of the importance of historicity in theformation of culture by looking at neolithization in terms, not of universal socialor human development; but as a local, historically anchored process. We alsotake as our point of departure a critical evaluation of the suggestion by AnthonyGiddens, pertinent to the understanding of an historical consciousness. Accordingto Giddens the disembedding tendencies, that tear social life out of its establishedprescription, i. e. tradition, is a feature of the modern society. A key feature in ourdiscussion is the historically constituted Mesolithic development in Scandinaviaand its influence on the neolithization process 3900 cal BC.
