The Author Digitized for Eternity : A Study of the Digitization of Literary Heritage at the Nordic National Libraries (English)
This master thesis examines the digitization of the literary heritage at the nordic national libraries. The aim of the study is to give an insight into how these national libraries, by digitizing certain collections of literature, shape an institutional identity in its role as a national institution. An additional aim is to investigate the national cultural policy discourse centering on cultural heritage in relation to digitization, that can be found in cultural policy documents, and with the effects these might have on institutional practices. The theories employed in the analysis are for these purposes drawn mainly from social constructionist theory, which includes a problematization of the process of cultural heritage in its relation to political intention and the subsequent institutional interpretation of that stated intention. Through a qualitative analysis of relevant official documents, centering on cultural heritage and digitization, the different aspects of the national cultural policy discourses will be revealed. By also examining specific digitization projects it will be shown how this discourse is later interpreted on the actual implementation level.
The main findings drawn from this analysis, once made, is that these examined libraries are all much influenced by the discourses found on a national political level. This may be most effectively exemplified by showing how the democracy aspect is expressed on both levels, as made apparent by the argument for availability, stressed firmly by all participants. Another important conclusion is that the national libraries, as influential institutions in their field, has the power to create an image of the nation, by choosing specific authors and works that purport a shared language and history. Through these choices and by the effectiveness of employed distribution, the institutions themselves contribute to the founding of a shared cultural heritage within the nation. In addition to this, the choices made by the institutions handling the digitization will result in chosen authors being incorporated in the national cultural canon.
