The Stockholm City Court 1850–1947 : A user's guide (English)
Abstract [en]

The archives of the Stockholm City Court (Stockholms rådhusrätt) between the years of 1850-1947 consist of 2000 meters worth of shelves and have been considered difficult to oversee due to its tricky organization. The archive is also lacking a coherent and reliable catalogue. This user’s guide aims to help everyone who wishes to enter the archives and its documents – researchers, genealogists and happy amateurs.

To understand the work of the Stockholm City Court during 1850-1947, a short historic background and an explanation of its place in civil authority and main tasks are given at the beginning of the user’s guide. To help the reader start using the archives, there is a detailed account of the different kinds of entries, for example catalogues, journals and registers.

Since the catalogues are insufficient, a large part of the guide describes the functions of the different departments of the city court at the time and elucidates which matters were referred where. Detailed descriptions of different matters and legal procedures during this time are also given. To make sure those readers without judicial or historical knowledge can profit from the guide there are continuous explanations of specific concepts used at the time.

In the guide there are references to other archives within the Stockholm City Archive (Stockholms stadsarkiv), but as the starting point of this guide is the archives of the Stockholm City Court, other archives will only be discussed briefly. One section of the guide handles institutions directly linked to the city court, such as the police authority, prisons and the courts of appeal.

Finally there are examples of cases to find in the archives. Hopefully these will give the reader a taste of the treasures to be found in the Stockholm City Court and a will to enter deeply into this period in time.

This is a one-year master’s thesis in archival science.
