For the Library - With the Times : A Study of Library Images in Texts Connected to the Swedish Award "Library of the Year" between 1986-2006 using Discourse Analysis (English)
Abstract [en]

In this one year’s master thesis the aim is to examine discourses and representations within the library field in texts connected to the Swedish award “Library of the Year” between 1986–2006. The questions posted to analyze are: what discourses can be found and what characterises them? Furthermore does the library intentionally or unintentionally mediate representations to the surrounding world? Does the library want to be portrayed in a specific way? The theoretical and methodological approaches in the study is the critical discourse analysis, developed by Norman Fairclough.

On the basis of a three-dimensional framework for critical discourse analysis, arguments and articles connected to the Swedish award “Library of the Year”, are examined. The results of the analysis reveal six discourses: a market economy discourse, an information technology discourse, an education discourse, an occupational discourse, a user discourse and an experience orientated discourse. The study also reveal that the discourses are due to the surrounding society and that the period between the years 1986–2006 characterizes by a striving for change, improvement and development. The library is portrayed in very positive terms throughout the material. The book is given very little room in the material. The award “Library of the Year” appears to be a forum, which give the libraries the opportunity to mediate their activities. Therefore the forum can be assumed to mediate intentional representations. Finally it is a multifacetted image of the library that is portrayed.
