The Sacred Authentic: convex and concave framings of punk

This paper deals with the relationship between subcultures and the mainstream and how punks make use of the mainstream in order to validate their own as well as others' behaviour as authentic. More so it focuses on how the meaning of the mainstream differs among participants and the consequences this has for subcultural mobilization; the drawing of boundaries and how identities are claimed, maintained, negotiated and refuted in relation to a cultural Other. I argue that in order to understand how meaning is constructed and how actions are made sense of we must approach the mainstream as existing within, what Goffman calls, a groups’ belief system. Further, drawing from Durkheim's binary division of the sacred and the profane, I claim that this set of beliefs renders some action possible while excluding other. As such the mainstream only exists in the actors’ articulations of it. Consequently instead of investigating this from an observing point of view our point of departure should be how the participants (re)produce and negotiate meaning from those structures that validate action, otherwise we risk excluding those participants that do not meet with our expectations of what constitute the authentic and the mainstream.
