On various forms of literary Polishness in Sweden
In recent years, numerous literary texts on Polish subjects have been published in Sweden. At one time, some would have been classified as “émigré literature” and treated as a supplement to works originally printed in Poland. Today, many texts written outside Poland have lost their special status as well as their political impact. After 2004, terms such as “writer in exile” or “refugee” became hard to justify once Poland joined the EU and people began crossing geographical borders and moving freely within Europe. However, this intensive mobility does not mean that cultural differences among various countries have dissolved. In fact, it has thrown the question of individual and national identities into sharp focus by reinforcing mutual similarities and differences as well as encouraging each nation to revisit its roots, historical past and collective memory. A lot has been written and said about the role of belles-lettres (both translations and writings on Polish matters written abroad) in creating an image of Poland, Poles and generally speaking, the category of Polishness. In this article, the author examines different forms of this literary phenomenon in order to reveal its diverse nature in Sweden. She does so by discussing three works, each representing a different category of a broadly-defined Polishness.
