An open window between Gotland and Stockholm – a study of how cultural heritage is presented and perceived by means of virtual technology (English)
In my thesis, I have studied the use of virtual technology in museums and how virtual technology can be used to present cultural heritage. During spring 2010, the Hallwyl Museum in Stockholm plans to present an exhibition on Ellen Roosval (born von Hallwyl), in which the visitors in Stockholm will be given the opportunity to visit the Roosvals’ summerhouse, Muramaris, on Gotland Island. The visit will be made possible by means of virtual technology.
The aim of this thesis is to present different approaches on how to use virtual technology for this specific exhibition by using theories of learning processes in museums as well as in virtual and mediated rooms. My theoretical approach has mainly been constructivist theories on learning processes in museums, but also theories on how participation in the exhibition stimulates learning. I also present examples of previous virtual exhibitions. By discussing the examples and theories, I will present approaches on how the exhibition could be carried out.
