Abstract [en]

This essay begins by questioning N. T. Wright’s criteria for the classification of Gospel literature and then examines when the term “gospel” emerged as a literary designation in early Christianity.  The essay also discusses Basilides’s modest witness to gospel materials in the first half of the second century and questions whether Basilides wrote a Gospel.  It is argued that scholars should avoid arbitrary theological criteria for genre classification and defining the scholarly “canon” of early Christian Gospels.
