Abstract [sv]

Sökningar utfördes i PubMed.

Abstract [en]

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neuropsychiatric disorder that brings many negative effects along such as individual suffering, social costs and a more frequent drug abuse that might lead to substance use disorders (SUD).

The aim of this literature study was to illustrate relations between ADHD and SUD in youth and adults.

The method was a literature review including ten scientific studies. The search for articles was done in Pubmed. The articles were read and analysed, and the results were categorized into themes after found relations between ADHD and SUD.

In the findings different themes are enlightened about heritage, environment, medical treatment, psychosocial treatment, co-morbidity and risk taking. Impulsiveness, genetic vulnerability, wrong medication, loss of  medication, early-onset SUD and psychiatric disorders are a few of  the relations that are discussed in the results.

Conclusions: there are many relations between ADHD and SUD. It’s difficult to tell which  condition that develops first and why another condition occurs, for an example SUD and conduct disorder in connection with ADHD. It’s important not give up in the search for treatment.
