Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
The Humanistiska fonden (Humanistic fund) was founded in 1929, to support research and studies within the humanities, mainly through monitary subsidiaries. In 1947 the fund started recieving funding from the state and thus became a goverment agency, and thereby bound by state law regarding the handling and keeping of records. After a final reorganisation in 1959, a new state council carried out the responsibilities of the fund from this year on.
The aim of this one year master thesis in archival science is to describe and discuss difficults encountered during the arrangement and registration of the Humanistic fund's archive. By using, and in combination with, terminology and concepts from archival science, the arisen problems are put into perspective. Some of the issues discussed are; how the shift in power from one organisation to another affect the archive as part of the larger issue of the principle of provenance's divided nature. Further, the issue of keeping the registration simple and respecting the original order of the archive is put against the use of schemes that may not always fit perfectly is discussed. This paper also touches on the subject of appraisal strategies; what is bound by law and how it is not always compatible with research interests.
