Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
The main purpose of this essay is to study the effectiveness of methods of teaching vocabulary of the English language in several 9th grade English classrooms. This study is carried out by firstly analyzing a selection of textbooks for English language in 9th grade and secondly by interviewing some language teachers who teach English language to 9th grade students. The research questions are the followings-
- What methods do the exercise books use to teach vocabulary? To what extend do the textbooks help students to ‘know’ words?
- In the language teachers’ opinion how important is teaching vocabulary and what methods do they use to teach vocabulary to theirs tudents? How do they use the vocabulary exercises in the textbooks?
The vocabulary exercises of the textbooks are evaluated against nine criteria given by linguist Michael J. Wallace (1982) of what it means to ‘know’ a word. The results show that no matter how good the vocabulary exercises of these textbooks are, they fulfill only three of Wallace’s nine criteria. All of the four language teachers that I interviewed agreed that vocabulary learning is the most essential part of language learning because vocabulary is the groundstone for all kinds of communication. The majority of the English language teachers that I interviewed also agreed that they completely depend on the vocabulary exercises in the textbooks that theyuse.
