Abstract [en]

Today, history museums are contested sites. Derived as a modern project to strengthen the nation’s newborn citizens – and to ensure and manifest the values of the state – they have undergone great changes. The museums do not longer present an one-sided narrative and the history of the nation is now challenged by other groups of society. The contest revolves around one important question: whose history is on display?

The clash between the museums as battlegrounds for political struggles and their efforts to meet academic standards creates controversy. This puts pressure on the museums. Exhibitions can be cancelled. Guided tours can be interrupted. Criticism can blacken a museums reputation. Despite an increased frequency in these incidents the subject still lacks sufficient academic research – especially when it comes to how museums deal with controversial exhibitions. How do they relate to sensitive and controversial subjects? How do they prepare and execute a controversial exhibition? What are their intentions?

In this research I have compared two exhibitions – Breaking the Silence at Armémuseum, Stockholm and Gaza – Porten mot havet at Medelhavsmuseet, Stockholm - in an attempt to explain how history museums deals with sensitive and controversial subjects. By using four comparative strategies – balance, objectivity, non-confrontational and non-dogmatic and conditional – and dividing the exhibition process into three sections – intention, preparation and execution – I have been able to show that Swedish history museums use different strategies to deal with hot topics and that they also are successful in their efforts to avoid controversy.
