The Anglo Swedish Society Malmö was founded in 1926 and its main purpose was to promote and support interest for the English language and the exchange between England and Sweden. It was uncertain when the archive had been turned over to the Malmö City Archives (MCA). The material had arrived in binders and according to MCA’s practices I lifted out the material to physically put them according to the Swedish archival standards in the general archive scheme which broke the principle of provenance.
The other archive consisted not only of documents from the real estate firm K.G. Pettersson but also from the real estate firm Göta founded by Karl Gustav Pettersson’s father Carl Adolf Pettersson. Adhering to MCA’s practices the archive ended up being cataloged as a personal archive rather than a corporate archive. According to recommendations I followed the general archive scheme rather than any specific alternatives for personal archives. After some discussion I convinced MCA to not cull a custom made binder since I felt keeping the material intact in this binder would increase the searchability of the archive.
The use and adherence to the general archive scheme at MCA could possibly cause an over reliance on the standards therein. This could then lead to the scheme being reduced to a set of step-by-step rules which in turn would diminish the analysis of the archivist and risk unnecessarily breaking the principle of provenance. It’s also clear that it’s probably not uncommon for practices to differ between archive institutions and even between individual archivists.
