Abstract [en]

It is now widely known that IT systems are a vital part of most companies and organizations. Despite this fact it is still a large proportion of all IT projects that fail. Figures and statistics show that the single largest source of error in IT projects is deficiencies in requirements management.With this background, the study aims at generating insight into how requirements are being managed within the organization of Trafikverket , and identify work-related problems and common deficiencies. It is also intended to examine whether the importance of requirements management is understood and given adequate resources within the organization.To fulfil the purpose, a qualitative study at Trafikverket was implemented. This has been performed in the form of interviews with personnel who in their work come in contact with requirements management.The results from the qualitative study were developed by recording and transcribing the interviews. They were then sought through for interesting concepts, relationships and theories that could be categorized. The data were interpreted from the generated categories and related to theories and concepts from literature within the field.As a result of this study, three aspects of the problems related to the requirements management at Trafikverket:• Organizational and work structure-related problems• Competence-related problems• Priority and insight-related problemsMany of the problems explained in the literature within the field could also be identified at Trafikverket. The study could also generate new aspects of some of the identified problems. The results also show that there is an understanding of the importance of requirements management within the organization, but there is still some way to work to translate the understanding into practice.

Abstract [sv]

Det är idag allmänt känt att IT-system är en vital del hos de allra flesta företag och organisationer. Trots detta är det fortfarande en stor del av alla IT-projekt som misslyckas. Siffror och statistik visar att den enskilt största felkällan i IT- projekt är bristande kravhantering.Med denna bakgrund syftades med uppsatsen att generera en inblick i Trafikverkets kravarbete samt identifiera relaterad problembild och vanliga brister. Det ämnades också undersöka huruvida vikten av kravhantering förstås och ges tillräckliga resurser inom organisationen.För att uppfylla syftet har en kvalitativ studie hos Trafikverket genomförts. Detta har utförts i form av intervjuer med personal som i sitt arbete kommer i kontakt med kravhantering.Resultatet från den kvalitativa studien har tagits fram genom att intervjuerna spelades in och transkriberades. De söktes därefter igenom efter intressanta begrepp, relationer och teorier som kunde kategoriseras. Datamaterialet har sedan tolkats utifrån de genererade kategorierna och relaterades till teorier och begrepp från litteratur inom området.Som resultat av denna studie har tre aspekter av problem relaterat till Trafikverkets kravhantering identifierats:

• Organisatoriska och arbetsstrukturrelaterade problem• Kompetensrelaterade problem• Prioritering- och insiktsrelaterade problem

Många av de problem som förklaras i litteratur inom området kunde också identifieras hos Trafikverket. I studien kunde även nya aspekter på några av problemen genereras. Resultaten visar vidare att det finns förståelse för kravhanteringens vikt inom organisationen, men det är fortfarande en bit kvar i arbetet att omsätta förståelsen till praktik.
