Images of the election : – an analysis of newspaper photos before the 2010 election of parliament in Sweden (Swedish)
Abstract [en]

Authors: Camilla Björk and Charlotta Wadenbrant

Aim: Our purpose is to investigate the significance of newspaper images and the impact they may have had on public opinion before the 2010 parliament election in Sweden. With this aim we have analyzed images in political news reporting based on criteria of impartiality, balance and the task of newspapers as news intermediaries.

Method and Material: We have chosen four of Sweden's largest daily newspapers, two tabloids and two newspapers. These are Dagens Nyheter, Svenska Dagbladet, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The study covers 128 issues in total, 32 for each paper during the period from 18 August to September 18, and our material comprises 408 images.

To achieve our aims we have conducted a survey, a quantitative content analysis with qualitative elements. In order to measure certain parts of the material that requires our interpretation, we have developed a qualitative interpretation chart. With this chart we have conducted a quantitative survey and gone through a large amount of data for our analysis.

Main results: We have in our thesis a series of new findings. The news reports before the 2010 election in four of Sweden's largest daily newspapers were neither impartial nor balanced. They were not neutral and balanced concerning the images, and certainly not in the text. The alliance was favored, and the red-green coalition at a disadvantage to some extent.

However, our results show that images and photo journalism has been more neutral in comparison with written content. The question is if it has helped to offset the otherwise unfavorable coverage in the text. We think that our research has helped develop methods for the analysis of news images in a more comprehensive way.
