Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
The aim of this thesis is to examine the opinions about outsourcing the acquisition process through approval profiles in Swedish public libraries. The emperical mateiral used to examine this is posts and comments in four library related blogs: Peter Alsbjers blogg!, Copyriot, BiblioBuster and bis-bloggen. By using discourse analysis and Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau's discourse theory as theoretical framework to analyse my material I discovered three majors themes: How approval profiles affects the profes-sional role of the librarian and how this changes the librarian’s attitude toward the library user. How approval profiles shift the role of the public library from a mass-educator to a more market oriented role. Thirdly it also brings about the discussion about high culture/low culture literature and its place in public libraries. In the discussion about the three themes two different discourses became apparent: the service orientated discourse where the librarians main function is to fulfill the library user’s needs and requests, and the mass-educator discourse where the librarian’s main function is to help the user to become a better citizen. This is a two years master's thesis in library and information science.
