Ipred, Law for Protection or Control? : – A Discourse Analysis Examining the IPRED-debate On the Internet (English)
The aim of this master thesis in Library- and Information Science is to examine how seven blog-authors reason about the role and function of the Ipred law, the directive of enforcement of intellectual property law. The study also examines how and if the authors use any metaphors or/and parables to describe Ipred and the consequencesof the law. Based on the theoretical framework of Laclau and Mouffe a model for text-analysis is constructed. The method used is discourse analysis, wich examines both written and spoken language. Five different discourses are identified. In the non-democracy discourse the authors claim that the law is designed for a special industry. Copyright holders get special treatment by lawmakers and politicians. In the intruding-discourse authors believe the law can be used for copyright holders to spy on Internet users thereby intruding upon private lives. In the non-creative discourse authors believe the law to limit the possibilities in being creative on the Internet. In the technology discourse authors say that the the law is not in keeping with modern technology. In The non-function discourse the authors are talking about a law that has yet to reach the intended goal of decreasing the illegal file-sharing on the Internet. Both parables and metaphors are used in the descriptions. Ipred is considered unfair in many ways and is for example named the private police law and a failure. “The copyright industry” is often criticized and is presented as harsh and mighty
