After World War II Bishop Eivind Berggrav visited Sweden, where he received ovations for his brave resistance to German occupation. When the people of Norway felt stong resentment against Sweden for its coward neutrality and collaboration with Germany, Eivind Berggrav knew that Archbishop Erling Eidem and the Nordic Ecumenical Institute had helped the resistance movements in Norway and Germany. Outwardly Berggrav did not want to receive official Swedish recognition, because of negative reactions in Norway, but privately he esteemed Archbishop Eidem. He left a placque in the Church in Uppsala thanking Church of Sweden for its aid during the occupation 1940-45.
