Note

Schmalenseeia is a rare Middle Cambrian fossil genus composed of a few species. The tiny trilobites are widespread, occurring in Canada, England, Scandinavia (and accordingly erratic boulders of Germany), China, and Tasmania. The attribution of the Burlingiidae (Burlingia and Schmalenseeia) to the Trilobita is questionable, as emphasized by the recent discovery of new burlingiids from Middle Cambrian erratic boulders of Northern Germany and Denmark. Some particular morphological traits of the suture, the rostral plate and the pleurae (devoid of pleural furrows), the absence of a true pygidium, and in some case the fusion of all the tergites into a single dorsal shield are all elements challenging the assignment of these forms to the Trilobita.
