Distriktssköterskors och sjuksköterskors kunskap om sårbehandling i primärvården: Val av förband
Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the registered nurses and district nurses’ knowledge about wound treatment related to choice of dressings at four common wound types (venous leg ulcer, burns, pressure ulcer and infected wounds). The aim was also to see if there were any differences in knowledge of wound treatment between registered nurses and district nurses.
Method: The study used a descriptive quantitative design. A study-specific questionnaire with 10 questions was developed. The questions covered what kind of dressings the participants consider appropriate to use in the treatment of wounds. The questionnaire was answered by twenty-three registered nurses and thirty-three district nurses at nine medical centers in Stockholm.
Main Result: The result of this study indicates that the district nurses´ generally have more education and partially better knowledge about wound treatment compared to the registered nurses. Further more, almost one half of the district nurses´ and more than two-thirds of the registered nurses´ did not think that they have sufficient knowledge about wound treatment. About 80 % of the district nurses´ and 70% of the registered nurses´ knew which dressings to use in venous leg ulcers, but regarding the other three wound types the knowledge was considerably lower.
Conclusion: Most of the registered nurses´ and district nurses´ at medical centers do not have enough knowledge about wound treatment. More ongoing information and education is needed.
