Given Names as Discourses: A Comparison of Names in Teen and Children’s Literature. (English)
This Master's thesis aims to research the distribution of Swedish- and foreign-sounding given names in the children's and teen literature registered in BTJ:s database BURK-search in the years 1992 and 2007.Quantitative research method is used in order to measure the percentage of names. The study also looks at gender representation in these books. The findings are mainly that the proportion of foreign-sounding names in these books has increased slighlty in 2007. However, western European given names still dominate the proportion of foreign-sounding names, in general, with more than two-thirds. An unwillingness to recognize whiteness as a key structural norm is discussed as one of the key factors behind the slow increase of non-European and Eastern European sounding names in these books.
