Towards a knowing organization. A comparative study of the National Library and the NationalArchives knowledge organization and handling of metadata. (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the knowledge creating aspects of two of Sweden’s largest memory institutions – the National Library and the National Archives – when it comes to digitalization and metadata. The chosen theory is Chun Wei Choo’s model the knowing organization, which enables a study of a specific organization’s different processes of knowledge. This perspective is examined through a survey of the differences and similarities between the National Library and the National Archives, when it comes to how they approach metadata and digitalization. The survey is divided into three questions: firstly, regarding the organization of knowledge: secondly, what kind of vision for digitalization and handling of metadata the memory institutions have and thirdly, what kind of specifications for metadata they demand of digital deliveries. In accordance with Geoffrey Bowker I have argued that the act of remembering is manifested in specific memory practice, in subsequence the specific organization of knowledge and information are connected to a specific memory practice. In this thesis metadata is regarded as one of many tools, yet one of the most current, of a specific memory practice.
