Children´s Libraries in the Future - Significance of Technology, Space and Proximity (English)

My aim with this Master’s thesis is to examine the future children’s libraries from a child’s perspective. It is important to get the children’s point of views in the shaping of the future children’s libraries. This way it will make them feel involved and that their input is important. There are five questions that I intend to answer. Which vision does children have of their libraries in the future? Are the future libraries for children going to be shaped in a way that  wakes up most children’s wishes and needs? What is going to be important in the shaping of the future children’s libraries? What are all these changes going to imply for children as libraries’ users? Finally, how are the future children’s libraries going to be financed? In order to do my study I have interviewed ten children who are regular users of the city of Solna’s main library and have also read different articles and books. The result of my study shows that technology, the physical space and the proximity to the libraries are going to be important issues in the shaping of the future children’s libraries. If libraries want to assist every child and her needs and wishes the libraries are going to become big culture centre with different activities proposed to the children. Another result shows some differences between what children and adults expect of their public library. Children just want to have fun and relax during their visit when the adults expect the library visit will give new knowledge to the children.
