The meeting place and the discourse order. A discourse analytic literature study of the public library’s functionas a meeting place. (English)
Abstract [en]

This masters thesis aims to explore the public library’s function as a meeting place. By using discourse analysis as the main theoretical tool the study sets out to analyze the ideas and presumptions on which the notion of the public library as a meeting place is founded. More specifically I have used the so called “integrated perspective” formulated by Marianne Winther Jørgensen and Louise Phillips. The investigation forms itself around the concept of a discourse order, which constitute the theoretical framework for the study. Through close reading of the academic literature the aim is to problematize as well as discuss the public library’s function and role as a meeting place in contemporary and future society. With starting point in library and information scientific literature the goal is to lay bare the specific expressions that together form the basis of this investigation.

The study shows that, in agreement with the theoretical framework, it is fair to talk about a well formed discourse order called ”the public library as a meeting place”. Within this greater order it is further possible to find, at least, five subordinated discourses that each one of them points out certain aspects of the public library's function as a meeting place. Although the discourses clearly can be said to speak for themselves, the study shows no great signs of conflict between the discourses. The discourse order is thus characterized by its homogeneity. The study also shows that the concepts of third place and social capital are fruitful partners in the discussion. A description of the public library cannot, however, be restricted to the characterization of a third place. The relation between the public library and the notion of third place has also shown to be weak at times. The conclusion is that the public library is something more or different than a third place. Links has also been made between the public library and the concept of social capital, both lingual and conceptual.
