Abstract [en]

Objective

The aim of this study was to explore experiences of highly educated parents regarding family planning. Furthermore, the aim was to explore the experiences of combining parenthood and a career, as well as their awareness on age and fertility.

Method

Interviews with eight informants were analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

Results

Many factors influenced their timing of family planning, such as age, personal goals, financial status and employment. Parenthood created new priorities regarding what is important in life, and caused a conflict between family life and career. They were aware of age and fertility.

Conclusion

There was no ideal timing of parenthood, this was affected by a complex picture of several factors. There was an expectation to manage combining a career and parenthood which could lead to a conflict between the two.  The informants had awareness regarding the effect of age on fertility, this knowledge was not however reason enough to form a family at a younger age.
