Abstract [en]

There has been a lot of saying about the "women situation" in the Sahrawi refugee camps in south of Algeria. The common picture one gets from humanitarian organizations and the UNHCR is that the Sahrawi women are impressively empowered in the refugee society, thanks to both the camps administration and the very Sahrawi culture itself. But there has actually hardly been any previous research about the actual experience of being a Sahrawi woman in the exceptional social, geographical, economic and discoursive circumstances a day-to-day life in these refugee camps creates and reproduces. This paper is based upon my experiences and conversations with Sahrawi people in the camp Smara during March 2012. Using the theoretical concept called "gender contract", I identify the metaphysical and cultural discourses about womanhood and conceptions about womens "essence" circulating among the refugees, and thereafter I present my impressions of how young Sahrawi women balance these sociocultural excpectations in their daily lives.
