Understanding the inclination to participate in parenting programs: applications of the Health Belief Model : Understanding the inclination to participate in parenting programs: applications of the Health Belief Model (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to describe which factors influence intention to participate in parenting programs. A model including family context variables and the constructs in the Health Belief Model (HBM) was tested. The data was collected from 504 mothers of children in the age range of 6 - 11 years, from 15 primary schools in two small communities in the northern part of Sweden. A multiple hierarchical regression analysis showed a correlation between two family context variables; past parenting resources use and strength and difficulties (SDQ), and three variables from the HBM construct; perceived benefits, perceived susceptibility and perceived self-efficacy. Total variance of intention to participate explained by this model was 22.3 %. Many other variables still remain to be discovered. A more promotive orientated recruitment strategy, focused on improving future behaviour and parenting skills might have increased the variance explained.
