The aim of this masters thesis is to analyze the ideological identity of the public library in the dailypress during the Swedish election years of 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. The main focus is to examinethe discursive and ideological forces which shaped the debate. My purpose is to examinethe relation between discursive change and social political change in the light of recent decadesof ever-increasing liberalization. This development has led to an increased privatization of governmentand cut-backs in the public sector. The public library in Sweden has remained outsidethe privatization of public institutions. While schools and pharmacies have been sold out, thepublic library has been relatively untouched, this is now about to change.I have chosen to highlight five discourses linked to political ideology: the book discourse, thedemocratic discourse, the spatial discourse, the information mediation discourse and the marketdiscourse. The book discourse and the democratic discourse are clearly on the politicalideological left-wing side, while the information mediating discourse and market discourse areon the right-wing. The ideological identity of the spatial discourse is more diffuse to identifybut ends up on the right side of the political scale. In my analysis, I conclude that the information mediation discourse has expanded and dominatesthe debate along with the market discourse. This has happened at the expense of the bookdiscourse and the democratic discourse. Political right-wing ideological values have a strongerimpact on the public library identity in the daily press in 2010 than it had in 1998. This has contributedto the development of increased marketization of the public library.
