This preliminary investigation was conducted in2-month-old rabbits. The perichondrium was strippedaway from the ear cartilage, and raised as a flap. A segmentof the exposed cartilage was then removed and theperichondrial flap was sutured back over the createddefect. The other ear served as a control, but there theresection of cartilage included the covering perichondrium. In the first group there was a progressive regenerationof cartilage originating from the perichondrium; in thecontrol study, no new cartilage developed. The chondrogenicactivity of the perichondrium of the aural cartilageis thus demonstrated and will be further verified insucceeding experiments.
