Google Books and LIBRIS: A Study of Students and Librarinans experiences of information seeking in GoogleBooks and Libris. (English)
Google has become a big phenomenon and 90 % of the swedish population uses Google’s search function. It hasbecome so common that to Google or in swedish ”googla” has become a verb in the Swedish Academia wordlist.Google Books Project has caused a lot of reactions from the library society about copyright and metadata. Theconnection between Google Books and the swedish national library system, LIBRIS, are strong. On Libris youget encourage to continue your search in Google Books.Earlier studies suggest that Google Scholar and the library systems are comparable as search functions. Thisstudy aims to research students and librians experiences of information seeking in both Google Books and Libris. Both groups have searched in each search function and then answered a survey. The questions in the survey arebased on Lancasters evaluation criterions: coverage, recall, precision, response time and user effort. The results show that most of the students choose Libris over Google Books but they give both searchfunctions overall good grades. The students give Libris more positive results regarding coverage, recall andprecision. They grade Google Books as having a quicker response time and a lower user effort. All of thelibrarians choose Libris over Google Books and give Libris more positive results in all criterion but one, theresponse time. The results suggest that Google Books can serve as a complementary search funktion to otherfunctions but can’t compete with Libris regarding the quality of retrieved documents.
