Abstract [en]

The old Norse religion has since the eleventh century when Christianity took the role as the officialreligion in the Scandinavian countries (Iceland included) been a fading belief. Today is all thatremains a collection of texts from the middle-ages, tales and names with forgotten meanings.This works aim is to shed light upon the nature of the mythic figures Surt and Muspellheim.Establishing a connection between them and characteristics of the special geography and nature onthe island of Iceland with focus on fire and volcanic activity. To accomplish this mainly parts of thePoetic and Prosaic Edda are analyzed and compared with relevant research, facts and history aboutthe nature of Iceland and Volcanic activity.
