User-related energy efficiency (English)
Abstract [en]

Energy efficiency is important both to reduce costs and to reduce greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. In Sweden 40 percent of the energy consumption is related to the buildings sector. Hospitals are complex buildings with different activities in the same building, which requires flexible technical systems for ventilation, heating and lightning. A quarter of the total energy consumption in Swedish hospitals is related to user activities in the hospitals. Therefore it is not only important to work with operational optimization but also to change user activities, to reduce energy consumption.

The objective of this thesis was to examine the user-related energy efficiency work at two care units, at the central hospital in Sundsvall within Västernorrlands County. The potential of user-related energy efficiency work at the two care units was examined through three questions: 

  • How much energy does a care unit use and for what?
  • What is the potential to reduce user-related energy consumption in the two specific care units and what barriers are there?
  • How can the potential increase and the barriers be reduced?

The results of this study identify lighting as the user-related field that uses most energy. The results show that the potential to reduce user-related energy consumption at the two care units are in the health workers positive attitudes towards energy efficiency and in installation of energy efficient lighting with user friendly light control systems. The barriers to reduce energy consumption are lack of time, lack of specific information about energy efficiency work at the care units, lack of incentive for the health workers and the high installation cost for new lightning systems. The recommendations for the county are to give feedback on the energy efficiency work at the care units and to work with incentive and action programs such as “Gröna avtal”.
