Pour une définition universelle de l'auxiliarité

Abstract [en]

In order to find a cognitively motivated and universal definition of auxiliarihood, it is suggested in this paper that absence of rhematicity in a coverb (‘rhematicity’ being used in the Aristotelian sense) be considered a necessary and sufficient condition for auxiliarihood. It is shown in particular that a coverb which cannot be the utterance focus of the sentence is not rhematic, and should thus be considered an auxiliary.
